Wood waste is a continually under-utilized resource throughout Alberta. The Alberta Wood Waste Recycling Association is a non-profit organization with a mandate aimed at reducing and ultimately eliminating the dumping of clean wood waste in landfills. The AWWRA is leading the charge towards more environmentally conscious handling of wood waste in Alberta and is using the City of Calgary’s example to encourage private and public sectors to divert clean wood waste away from landfills and to more productive applications. In Calgary any material identified as a “designated material,” which clean wood waste falls under, is charged $170/ton, making alternatives to traditional land-filling a viable option. The Association is hoping that these economic triggers will be adopted throughout Alberta, ultimately leading to a ban on clean wood waste in landfills. IRSI is a proud member of the AWWRA.
